Canada Day Celebrate Canada's Birthday

Ottawa Cycling Paths and Ottawa Bike Rentals

One of the best things to do in ottawa in the summer months that is also free is biking or cycling the historic rideau canal or along the many pathways on both the ottawa and gatineau side of the river. You can travel along many scenic pathways and view historic sites such as Rideau Falls, Experimental Farm, Hartwell Locks, Dows Lake, or going east you can view the Prime ministers residence, Rideau Hall, the Canadian War Museum or going across the river to the Gatineau side of the ottawa river you can also bike to the Casino du Lac Leamy. You can also bike from downtown ottawa to Mooney's Bay Beach, or going west along the ottawa river parkway you can bike to Brittania Beach as well. If you like climbing hills, you should try biking in the Gatineau hills as it is quite a challenging ride and very scenic as well. If you need to rent a bike for your excursion, or you would like to go on a bike tour you can do so

Cruise the Historic Rideau Canal or Ottawa River by Boat Cruise
Another fun thing to do is take a bilingual guided Boat cruise on either the Rideau Canal or the Ottawa River by either Pauls Boat lines or you can also try the Lady Dive which is an amphibious Bus that goes into the water and works like a boat as well. Double Decker Bus Tour
Take the scenic double decker bus tour and get a pass for all day off and riding so you can visit sites you like such as museums and get on and get off the bus as time allow you. A great way to view the downtown byward market as well as other historic sites such as the parliament buildings, rideau canal, and othe sites.

Byward Market and Downtown Rideau Center Shopping

Shop for fresh fruit, vegetables or fresh flowers, or sit at a cafe in the byward market mall, go shopping in the rideau center shopping mall or shop along the upscale stores located on Sussex drive. The downtown byward market is a shoppers paradise with so much to see and do including many restaurants, outdoor cafes, local hot dog stands, or cafes selling everything from cafe lattes to bagels, or indian food, chinese food or other culinary experiences. You can also shop for art, crafts, tourist shopping and much more. Other shopping locations include St Laurent Shopping Mall, Bayshore Shopping Mall, Westboro and the Glebe which is located on Bank Street South.

Mooney's Bay Beach and Britannia Beach

Spend an afternoon with the kids soaking up the sun at ottawa's two beaches, Mooney's Beay Beach just south of downtown off Riverside drive, or Brittania Beach which is west of downtown just off Carling Avenue. Mooney's bay beach is known for the HOPE volleyball tournament held each year, which is the largest tournament of it's kind in the world. Mooney's bay beach has fun things for kids as well including swings, monkey bars, slides and teeter totters as well as climbing structures. Brittania beach offers a park with things for kids as well. Both beaches have food concessions for drinks and food or bring along your cooler for refreshments.
Parking: City Meters are at Mooney's bay beach or park for free across the street in the neighbourhood. Parking at Brittania Beach is free.

Ottawa Museums

Ottawa Festivals and Ottawa Events
Ottawa offers some world class entertainment in the city's capital with festivals starting in early May and ending in September with ottawa's newest festival, the Ottawa Ragae Festival. Things to do with kids in Ottawa
There are lots of things to do with kids and the whole family in ottawa most being free. Find updated information on our ottawa attractions page that features attractions for kids. Some suggestions are the bike pathways that ottawa has to offer as they are all over the city and are great for biking or roller blade riding and are closed to car traffic on sundays from 9:00am to 1:00 pm. Other ideas for things for kids to do in ottawa are the many parks with slides, swing sets, monkey bars, teeter totters, and indoor and outdoor swimming pools ottawa has located all across the city.

Why not try the changing of the gaurd on parliament hill each day at 10:00am is absolutely free and starts daily at 10:00am on the hill. Other suggestions include Chapters stores for some books to read, the Canadian Children's Museum in the Museum of Civilization in Hull-Gatineau, the Canadian Aviation Museum, or Museum of Science and Technology. Other great places for kids are the Canadian Tulip Festival in May, CHEO annual teddy bear picnic, Gloucester Fair, Ottawa Super Ex, Ottawa 67s Hockey Games, Ottawa Senators NHL Hockey games, Papanack Zoo, Mont Cascades Water Slides, Experimental Farm, RCMP Musical Ride, Cosmic Adventures, or Midway Family Fun Park.
